Internship Program

 

The PALCUS Internship Program, was established in 1994 to provide Portuguese-American students with work experience in their field of interest. Using its connections with government, civil-society and business leaders, PALCUS helps these students find internships which will give them the experience needed for success in a future career.

 

To date PALCUS has placed more than 140 young Portuguese-American university students from around the United States in positions in Senate and Congressional offices, the U.S. Embassy in Lisbon, Portuguese Consulates in the U.S., Fortune 500 companies, and several other key governmental departments and agencies both in Washington, DC, in Lisbon, Portugal as well as the office of the Direcção Regional das Comunidades, Governo Regional dos Açores.

 

This program provides both undergraduate and graduate Portuguese-American students with the opportunity to obtain invaluable work and career experience in government, business, and international organizations throughout the United States and Portugal.  Internships  have been served at embassies, consulate offices, U.S. senate and congressional offices, the PALCUS headquarters, large private companies, professional offices and other government agencies.

 

Previous interns have been given positions in Washington D.C., and at the hometown offices of U.S. Congressmen such as Devin Nunes, Patrick Kennedy, Barney Frank, Brian Bilbray, Lincoln Chafee, Steny Hoyer and George Radonovich and NJ Assemblyman Antonio Coutinho. Some have interned at Portuguese consulates in Newark, New York City, New Bedford, San Francisco and Providence. Others have interned at the Luso-American Development Foundation in Lisbon, as well as the U.S. Embassy in Lisbon.

Two full-time positions in Portugal for June & July (8 weeks)

Criteria for application:

  • Be a PALCUS member

  • Attest to at least 25% Portuguese Ancestry

  • Minimum G.P.A. = 2.5 (Unofficial transcript required at time of application)

  • U.S. passport valid within 6 months of return to the United States

  • Submit application and transcript no later than March 15, 2020.

NEW!  2020 Summer Internship in Portugal

​

PALCUS and PFSA have partnered to provide a summer internship in Portugal to a PFSA member who is an undergraduate or graduate student. Through the PALCUS/PFSA partnership, all costs related to the internship and lodging in Portugal will be covered.  Students are responsible for airfare, meals and personal expenses. 

 

One full-time position in Portugal for June & July (8 weeks).

This program will provide both undergraduate and graduate students with the opportunity to obtain invaluable work and career experience in government, business, and international organizations throughout Portugal.  Internships can be served at embassies, consulate offices, large private companies, professional offices and other government agencies.

 

The internship is managed by the Study in Portugal Network (SiPN), a FLAD organization. SiPN provides a unique range of opportunities for students looking for an international internship. These opportunities run the gamut from placements with governmental organizations, NGOs, INGOs, or for-profit companies across a wide variety of disciplinary areas. The program provides housing, weekend trips and all the logistics to make the students' stay a productive one. Placements are mostly in Lisbon, but also include Porto and the Azores. Students can also combine a part-time position with one of the other classes running during each of the summer sessions, earning as many 12 semester credits in 2 months.
